CHICAGO (AP) -- A billionaire family of Chicago Cubs fans - including one who first met his wife in the bleachers at Wrigley Field - is set to purchase the team and ballpark from Tribune Co.
The sale would include Wrigley Field and a 25 percent interest in a regional sports network, said Dennis Culloton, a spokesman for group head Tom Ricketts. Culloton said the deal was worth about $900 million.
"My family and I are Cubs fans," Ricketts said in a statement Thursday night. "We share the goal of Cubs fans everywhere to win a World Series and build the consistent championship tradition that the fans deserve."
The family, whose bid was picked from among three finalists, also said in the statement that it's looking forward to working with the Tribune and Major League Baseball to close the transaction promptly. Tribune Co. spokesman Gary Weitman declined comment.
The selection of Tom Ricketts, a member of the founding family of TD Ameritrade Holding Corp., and chief executive of InCapital LLC, was first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times' Web site.

NEW YORK (AFP) — A book written by the estranged younger brother of disgraced former baseball hero Mark McGwire says the record-setting slugger took steroids, the website www.deadspin.com reported Thursday.
Jay McGwire claimed in the as-yet-unpublished memoir that he was the reason that McGwire became involved in performance-enhancing drugs.
"Mark is a man I think most would like to forgive because his reason wasn't nefarious. It was for survival," Jay McGwire wrote.
Mark McGwire, a retired standout for the St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland A's, hit 70 home runs in the 1998 season to shatter the one-season Major League Baseball record of 61 by Roger Maris in 1961, among the most hallowed US baseball marks.
But the glory of the time turned sour with doping accusations.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nearly a year after Roger Clemens told Congress he did not use performance-enhancing drugs, a federal grand jury is being asked to determine whether he should be indicted on charges of lying under oath.
The grand-jury probe was confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday by two people who were briefed on the matter. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because grand jury proceedings are supposed to be secret.
Congress asked the Justice Department to look into whether the seven-time Cy Young Award winner lied last February, when he testified under oath at a deposition and a public House hearing that he never took illegal performance enhancers.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Baseball authorized nearly 8 percent of its players to use drugs for ADHD last season, which allowed them to take otherwise banned stimulants.
A total of 106 exemptions for banned drugs were given to major leaguers claiming Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder from the end of the 2007 season until the end of the 2008 season, according to a report released Friday by the sport's independent drug-testing administrator.
That's up from 103 therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) for ADHD in 2007, according to figures cited by baseball officials before a congressional committee last year.
